As if since the dawn of humankind, the issue of war and peace has been endless. One may wonder if we will ever see that day arrive. Yet waiting is not a choice. As the 13th century prayer of Saint Francis implores, “Make me a channel of Your peace” – we think of peace as the absence of war, but when we explore the “weapons”, we see our own hearts, with all the prejudice, fear, and ignorance. Only when we cultivate peace within our hearts and become embodiments of peace itself can it be realised.
The “Cultivating Peace” art and educational project begins with the search for inner peace, allowing young people to first recognise their own sentiments and know themselves, then learn to interact with others. Over the past few months, we have invited six artists to lead different workshops and community participation activities, enabling young people to rediscover themselves and the city through their daily lives and familiar environments. This has included integration with animals and plants; seeking out the marginalised people and things in the city; as well as giving voice to the whispers buried in their hearts. As the culmination of the project, “Amid Revelation” will allow the audience to witness the co-creations of the artists and students, and through listening and appreciation, find their own kingdom of peace.
